Managers as leaders exist to get result by managing performance. They can and should use performance management to help them plan, direct, measure and monitor performance. It can provide a framework in which they can develop and display their leadership skills.
 
Motivation
Performance management processes can motivate staff through powerful and long-lasting non financial means by providing feedback, recgnition, direction and the opportunity for growth in competence and skill. They can also be linked to performance-related pay (PRP) schemes which aim to provide direct financial motivation.
